Scars can affect a person in several ways, physically, emotional, and psychologically.
It can significantly impair quality of life. Depending on location and severity of scar/s, it may impact mobility or function, especially if it involves joints or sensitive areas. Due to loss of thermoregulation, scars are often dry and patients often complain of physical discomforts such as intense itching, hyper-sensitivity, stiffness and pain. Keloids are particularly prone to repeated infections causing patients to have to take courses of antibiotics and sometimes the infection may even require surgery.
Patients may experience diminished self-esteem, feelings of embarrassment and in some cases, scars from traumatic injuries can evoke memories of the incident, leading to emotional distress or PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
It has been reported that 71% patients felt they more concerned of the scars than their attending surgeons and 91% value small improvement in scarring.
Addressing both physical and emotional concerns is important for someone dealing with scarring.
With modern aesthetic surgery, your ideal of beauty and wellness can be met.
Schedule your consultation todayScar treatment in Asians is particularly challenging as thickened scars like keloids and hyper-pigmented scars are more common in Asians compared to Caucasians. Therefore, scar therapy often has to be more aggressive in Asians, which often involves a combination of treatment i.e. surgical excision, aggressive laser therapy along with appropriate injections like steroids and botox. Scar therapy also needs to be complemented by the patient’s own maintenance regime with application of scar tape or scar gel and wearing of suitable pressure garments.
Depending on factors like location, severity and type of scar, your symptoms and medical issues, Dr Pearlie will advise a treatment plan which may involve surgery, or non-surgical treatment using laser and injections. If you require surgery, depending on severity and your pain threshold, it may be performed under GA (general anaesthesia), sedation or LA (local anaesthesia). Non-surgical treatment is usually done using strong “numbing cream” applied 20-30 mins before the treatment. You may require a number of treatment sessions and by the end of the treatment regime, you can expect to see and feel improvement in symptoms (itching, discomfort, tightness etc) and appearance of the scar/s (colour, texture and looking more like normal skin).
